Contraindications Of Using a Neti Pot

Nasal irrigation, often performed using devices like a Neti Pot, is a practice aimed at relieving sinonasal symptoms. However, there are specific situations where its use is not recommended due to potential risks.

Nasal irrigation is contraindicated in cases of facial trauma. This is because there is a risk of nasal solution leaking into "danger spaces or plane" within the facial structure.

Additionally, individuals with neurologic or musculoskeletal diseases, such as intention tremor, should avoid nasal irrigation. The concern here is an increased risk of aspiration, where the solution could inadvertently be inhaled into the lungs.

While not a direct contraindication of the device itself, it is crucial to ensure that the nasal solution used is sterile, or that the water has been initially boiled, to reduce the risk of spreading infection from microorganisms in the nasal cavity. The precise process on how to make up the solution for your neti pot can be found here.
