Angie answers your questions about our products:
How effective is tongue scraping compared to other oral hygiene practices?
Studies have shown that jihwa prakshalana (tongue scraping) is more effective at removing toxins and bacteria from the tongue than brushing the tongue with a toothbrush. While brushing and flossing loosen debris, they don't remove decay causing bacteria living in the deep crevices of the tongue.
Mechanical tongue cleaning, regardless of the specific tool, is effective at reducing bad breath and tongue coating. Copper tongue cleaners showed a significant reduction in tongue coating.
How is using a neti pot beneficial to respiratory health?
The practice of jala neti (nasal cleansing) is identified as one of the "Shatkarmas," which are purification techniques within yoga.
Nasal irrigation has been proven to reduce and alleviate symptoms affecting the nasal cavity and sinuses. It reduces symptoms like nasal discharge, obstruction, and congestion, and can also decrease the concentration of inflammatory mediators such as leukotriene C4.
This can also lead to a reduction in the use of medications like oral antihistamines and nasal corticosteroids so it is a great non pharmacological approach to your respiratory health.
What is a mudrā and what scientific research supports their benefits?
Mudrās are traditional gestures or seals with deep roots in ancient Indian practices like yoga, meditation, and Ayurvedic healing.
They are recognised as tools to channel energy and for healing for both body and mind, working holistically by balancing physical, mental, and emotional aspects.
While scientific research on mudrās is still in its early stages, emerging studies suggest that these hand gestures may stimulate nerve endings and influence brain activity.
This stimulation can alter physiological responses, such as the autonomic nervous system and hormonal balance. More research is needed to illuminate the mechanisms behind mudrās but just as was done to prove the powerful benefits of prāṇāyāma, I am certain that modern science will catch up with the ancient wisdom of this ritual.
